This Syrah is sourced from steep blocks of Montes' Finca Apalta Estate vineyard with some additions from moderately sloped west facing blocks of their Marchigüe Estate vineyard. These two unique vineyards feature granite-rich soils in differing degrees of decomposition. Both have considerable variation in the clay content, depth, and organic matter from the influence of erosion and deposits from local rivers over time. The soils are generally deep in the flat areas and thinner at the foot of the mountains and at higher elevations.

Harvest Note
The 2021 season was relatively mild, despite the ongoing water deficit that has become a constant challenge. Winter passed without frost in the vineyards, and spring provided enough rainfall to keep the vines healthy until harvest. Bud break and fruit set proceeded as expected, though the final bunches at harvest were smaller and lighter than the previous season’s, affecting nearly all varieties. Summer was dry, with only a few days of high temperatures during veraison. At the Apalta and Marchigue estates, Syrah harvest was delayed by at least 10 days due to cooler nights in late March, which also helped preserve acidity and boost aromatic potential.
Tasting Note
Deep red-violet in color, the nose is full of Syrah character, with strong notes of ripe blackberry and blueberry. On the palate, strawberry and cherry are underscored by meringue and liquorice with a subtle hint of leather. The palate is balanced and very smooth, with good body and a very appealing elegance.
Food Pairing
Highly recommended with red meats, Mongolian beef, spaghetti with Bolognese sauce, and lambchops with Cabernet and mushroom sauce.
