The Montes Classic Chardonnay hails from some of the finest Chardonnay-growing sites in Chile's Casablanca and Curico Valleys. The Casablanca Valley contributes a cool climate expression of Chardonnay with fresh citrus and floral notes, while the warmer Curico Valley adds tropical components to the blend including pineapple, peaches and apricots.

Harvest Note
All grapes have now been picked and gathered in. Although the harvest proceeded relatively ‘normal’, it has been by far the most difficult we’ve ever had because of the complications of COVID-19. The difficulties have been far more challenging than the very worst problems grape-growing and winemaking can throw at us. The restrictions we introduced and continue to impose on our workforce center on strict sanitization regimes for individuals and winery equipment. We’ve had to reduce the number of working groups of people and restrict entry to the winery for third parties and suppliers. We’ve also had to separate day and night shifts into schedules so that people do not come into contact with each other. The harvest and grape selection have likewise been more restricted in terms of the physical space allowed between individuals. These precautions have slowed down the harvest. But they have also brought positive results, as individual processes have been more focused, which ends up improving overall quality. In the vineyard the season was generally warm, but very dry because of the significant drought that has affected the area for many years. This water shortage caused a reduction in yields of about 20%, which technically increases grape quality thanks to better ventilation of bunches, better sun exposure, and more uniform ripening. These conditions also resulted in picking starting earlier than in a normal year: one month earlier for the red grapes and one to two weeks for the white. The early harvest meant that the grapes arrived at the winery in particularly good condition, in terms of both quality and health. This was especially true for the Chardonnay; as it’s a late ripener we usually have to wait so long that the risk of rot increases and very thorough bunch inspection is needed. This hot, dry year impeded the spread of fungus among the grapes. The reduced volume of wine produced this year was caused by the smaller size of individual grapes and bunches. This has undoubtedly increased concentration and created better flavors and overall must quality.

About the Grape

Chardonnay
Though it has a distinctive profile, Chardonnay reflects other factors such as soil composition and vinification technique. Chardonnay is a reliable, hardy and prolific vine whose only real vulnerabilities are frost and uneven development of fruit.
