The Sommerberg Grand Cru enjoys a dramatic steep south facing exposure. The vineyard has to be cultivated with a winch, just like the Rangen. The deep decomposed granite is however easier to cultivate but also more susceptible to erosion. It is a difficult vineyard to work but so beautiful and capable to reward the winegrower with extraordinary wines. The soil is here quite deep and the granite mother rock well decomposed. The vines are amazingly resistant to drought as the roots can quickly penetrate the soil. Unfortunately, 2021 is a very small production, the vines having suffered from frost in April and also bad weather in spring. Luckily, the climate in summer was ideal and the grapes ripened perfectly keeping an astonishing racy acidity. Like most other Riesling in 2021, the Sommerberg fermented for an entire year before becoming dry.

Harvest Note
2021 was a challenging vintage which resulted in small volumes of extraordinary wines. The frost of April 6th significantly reduced the final harvest volumes. June & July saw heavy rains leading to rapid growth but unfortunately mildew also. August and September were sunny and dry, with harvest from September 15th to October 2nd. The small crop fermented quickly, alcohols were below usual levels, and all wines fermented completely dry.
Tasting Note
Bright yellow color. Intense and complex nose, showing some floral notes, light citrus aromas, but mostly vibrant mineral notes. Still slightly closed, it announces a wine definitely influenced by the granitic soil of the Sommerberg. The palate is structured around an impressive tight acidity that gives a fantastic racy spine to this 2021 vintage which appears then so delicate. The mouth is precise with some aromatic herbs, crisp citrus fruit and finishes very dry and with lots of tension. Great aging potential.
